Local Partners: About

NaNoWriMo helps writers make local connections all over the world, from Houston to Tokyo to Detroit to Bucharest to Glasgow to Vancouver (and more!). In 2022:

  • 791 volunteer Municipal Liaisons guided 671 regions on six continents.
  • 1,038 libraries, bookstores, and community centers supported novelists through our Come Write In program.
  • 4,820 teachers facilitated wild bursts of creativity from kindergarten through high school as part of our Young Writers Program.

The first step toward getting more involved in your community is to join your local region on NaNoWriMo site. Want to do more? Keep reading!

Become a Municipal Liaison

Our team of volunteer Municipal Liaisons do amazing things! They organize and run local writing events, support and encourage writers in their areas, and build creative communities all over the globe.

If you love encouraging writers, building community connections, and just being an all-around creativity cheerleader, this might just be the role for you! View the full role description here.

ML applications for 2023 are now closed. If you’d like to get an email when applications for 2024 are available, you can join our notification list. Thank you for your interest in supporting creative communities!

Sign up as a Come Write In Space

Are you a community space like a library, bookstore, or community center looking for ways to engage with a creative culture of passionate writers? Sign up as a Come Write In (CWI) space!

Here’s what happens once you sign up:

  • We’ll send you a welcome email with our Come Write In guide, plus instructions for how to post your events to the NaNoWriMo site.
  • Closer to November (our flagship National Novel Writing Month event), we’ll send you an optional form to add information about your space to be shared publicly with NaNoWriMo participants. Note: the button above does NOT make your information public on the site—it just signs you up for our CWI mailing list.
  • Depending on the time of year, we might have CWI kits available for pre-order or order. These kits contain a folded poster, plus 25 stickers and bookmarks (with the opportunity to order more for the price of shipping). CWI spaces can order one free kit each year. We also have window clings available for purchase.
  • We’ll send occasional emails throughout the year, especially during our community writing challenges with targeted resources, virtual events, and opportunities to connect with local writers.

Here’s what we expect Come Write In spaces to do:

  • Nothing! Everything is optional! Signing up just adds you to our mailing list, which you can always unsubscribe from. Some CWI spaces keep open hours for writers, others host specific events, and others just stay signed up on our list to receive updates about our programs. It’s up to you!

Whether in-person, virtually or a combination of the two, Come Write In is a great way to bring people together and support a culture of creative fellowship!

Host a Local Event

MLs and CWI spaces aren’t the only ones who can grow literary communities—if you’re a participant interested in hosting a local writing event, submit it to your regional event calendar!

First, be sure to join your region. Then, navigate to the “Events” tab on the regional landing page and click the “Submit an Event” button. Your local ML or a NaNoWriMo staff member must approve your event before it will appear. This can take up to a week or more, so please submit with plenty of lead time!

Note: You may ask for donations to cover expenses, but you cannot charge a mandatory fee to attend a NaNoWriMo event or an event that you are promoting on our website.

⭐️Whether you’re an ML, CWI space, or participant, if your event is virtual or hybrid and you think the broader NaNoWriMo community would be interested, fill out our featured regional events form and we might choose to highlight it on our NaNoWriMo HQ Events page.⭐️

Note: You must first get your event approved on your regional events page in order to do this.
